Orphan sponsorship in Islam is about more than giving money.

It is about caring for a child who has lost a parent and may be facing a hard life.

Islam gives special importance to caring for orphans.

The Qur’an reminds us many times to treat them with kindness.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught Muslims to care for them.

So what does orphan sponsorship mean today?

Here is a simple guide.

What Is an Orphan in Islam?

In Islamic teaching, the word yateem is often used for a child whose father died before the child reached adulthood.

Losing a father can change a child’s life very fast.

For many families around the world, the father was the main person earning money.

After he dies, the family may have trouble paying for:

• Food
• Rent
• School
• Clothes
• Medicine
• Transportation

The mother or guardian may be doing everything possible.

But sometimes it is still not enough.

This is where orphan sponsorship can help.

What Did the Prophet ﷺ Say About Orphans?

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Muslims about the great reward for caring for an orphan.

He said that he and the person who cares for an orphan would be together in Paradise like two fingers held close together.

It is one of the best-known teachings about orphan care in Islam.

But there is something important behind this teaching.

The goal is not only to send money.

It is to care.

What Is Orphan Sponsorship?

Orphan sponsorship is regular help for a child.

Usually, a donor gives an amount each month or each year.

The charity then uses that support to help meet the child’s needs.

This may include:

• Food
• Clothing
• Education
• Healthcare
• Shelter
• Other basic needs

The child stays with his or her family or guardian whenever possible.

The sponsor does not become the child’s parent.

The child’s name and family identity remain the same.

How Much Does It Cost to Sponsor an Orphan?

Every charity has a different amount.

At Humanity Increased, our current orphan sponsorship is $55 per month.

That is $660 per year.

But we think the more important question is:

What does the $55 actually do?

Here is our current breakdown.

$40 Helps With Basic Needs

Most of the monthly sponsorship helps with the child’s daily needs.

That may include food, clothes, education, shelter, and medical care.

Every child’s needs are a little different.

$8 Is Saved for the Future

This is one part of our program that is very important to us.

We save $8 each month for the child through a Sharia-compliant savings program.

Why?

Because children grow up.

One day, the sponsorship will end.

The child may then need help with college, training, transportation, work, or starting a small business.

Saving $8 will not solve everything.

But after many years, it can give the young person something to start with.

We want to think about age 18 now, not when the child turns 18.

$5 Supports a Local Case Worker

Someone needs to know how the child is doing.

A case worker helps follow the child’s situation.

Is the child in school?

Is there a medical need?

Has something changed at home?

Does the family have a new problem?

This local follow-up helps us understand what is really happening.

$2 Supports the Program in the U.S.

The final $2 helps manage the program from the United States.

This includes record keeping, donor communication, reports, and other program work.

We want donors to know this.

You should know where your sponsorship money goes.

Why Isn’t Monthly Money Enough?

Sometimes a child’s biggest problem cannot be fixed by a monthly payment.

Imagine a child receives food and school help.

But the family lives in a damaged mud home.

When it rains, water comes inside.

Or the child may need a safe bathroom.

Or shoes.

Or medical care.

That is why Humanity Increased tries to look at the whole child.

Our orphan work has included support beyond the normal monthly payment when possible.

In Uganda, for example, we have worked on better homes and other needs for children in our orphan program.

What Does “Quality Over Quantity” Mean?

You may see charities talk about helping thousands of orphans.

Large numbers can be good.

But there is another question we should ask.

What is happening to each child?

At Humanity Increased, we believe in quality over quantity.

We want to know the children in our program.

We want someone checking on them.

We want them in school.

We want them to have safe housing.

We want to know when something goes wrong.

And we want them to have something saved for their future.

Helping fewer children well can sometimes be better than helping many children with very little follow-up.

Can I Use Zakat to Sponsor an Orphan?

Sometimes.

But being an orphan by itself does not always mean the child can receive Zakat.

Allah explains who can receive Zakat in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60.

If the orphan is poor or in need, the child may qualify.

The child’s situation should be checked.

If you want to use Zakat for an orphan sponsorship, tell the charity before you give.

Can I Give Sadaqah for an Orphan?

Yes.

You can use voluntary charity to help an orphan.

Many people also sponsor an orphan in honor of a parent, family member, or loved one.

If you have a question about a special religious intention, speak with a trusted scholar.

What Should I Look for in an Orphan Charity?

Do not choose only by price.

Ask what the child actually receives.

Ask if someone checks on the child.

Ask if you will receive updates.

Ask how the charity protects the child’s privacy.

Ask what happens if the child has a bigger need.

Most of all, look for a program that sees the child as a person.

Not a number.

One Child Matters

You do not have to help 100 children to make a difference.

Helping one child matters.

One child going to school matters.

One child getting medicine matters.

One child moving into a safer home matters.

One child reaching adulthood with some money saved matters.

Orphan sponsorship is not about feeling sorry for a child.

It is about giving that child a chance.
