Looking for the best Zakat charity in the USA?

There are many Muslim charities to choose from.

Some are large. Some are small. Some work in the United States. Others help people around the world.

So how do you know where to give your Zakat?

A famous name should not be the only reason you give.

Your Zakat is an act of worship. It is also a trust.

Here are eight things we believe every donor should check before giving.

1. Does the Charity Have a Zakat Policy?

Start here.

A charity that collects Zakat should explain how it handles it.

Look for answers to simple questions:

Who receives the Zakat?

How does the charity know if someone can receive it?

How long does the charity hold the money?

Does the charity use part of the Zakat to manage the program?

You should not have to guess.

2. Does It Check Who Can Receive Zakat?

Not every person in need can receive Zakat in every case.

Allah tells us who may receive Zakat in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60.

This includes the poor and the needy, along with other groups named in the verse.

A good charity should have a way to check each case.

For example, someone may be a widow, orphan, refugee, or disaster survivor.

That alone does not always answer the Zakat question.

The person’s needs should be checked.

3. Is the Charity a Real Nonprofit?

If you are giving to a charity in the United States, check its nonprofit status.

Look for:

• Its legal name
• EIN
• Address
• Website
• Leadership
• 501(c)(3) status

You can also look up a charity through the IRS.

This only takes a few minutes.

It can help you know who you are trusting with your money.

4. Can You See Its Work?

A charity should be able to show what it does.

Look for real photos.

Look for project updates.

Look for reports.

Look for places, dates, costs, and the number of people helped.

A charity must protect the privacy of people it helps. But donors should still be able to see real proof that projects happened.

5. Does the Charity Tell You Where Your Money Goes?

Ask what happens after you give.

No charity can run without costs.

There are costs for staff, banks, technology, reports, travel, accounting, and other work.

That does not make a charity bad.

What matters is being clear with donors.

Be careful when a group makes a big promise but gives very little detail.

You should know how your Zakat is handled.

6. Does the Charity Report Back?

You should not give your money and never hear about the project again.

Good charities should share updates when they can.

That may include:

• Photos
• Videos
• Project reports
• Stories
• Financial reports
• Email updates

These updates help you see what your support did.

7. Can You Reach a Real Person?

Try contacting the charity.

Send an email.

Make a call.

Ask a question about Zakat.

You should be able to reach someone who can explain how the program works.

Questions from donors are a good thing.

Zakat is important. You have every right to ask.

8. Does the Charity Treat People With Dignity?

This is easy to forget.

People receiving aid are not props for fundraising.

They are mothers.

Fathers.

Children.

Grandparents.

They deserve respect.

Photos and stories should be shared with care.

Children need extra protection.

A good charity should help people without taking away their dignity.
