Zakat al-Fitr

This Ramadan, Multiply Your Mercy

Ramadan is a month of purification — purification of the soul through fasting, and purification of our wealth through charity.
Before the end of Ramadan, every Muslim is required to give Zakat al-Fitr, a special form of charity connected to the completion of fasting.
At Humanity Increased, we distribute your Zakat al-Fitr directly to orphans in Uganda — children living in severe poverty who rely on the support of donors like you.
Zakat al-Fitr: $15 per person
We take zero administrative cost from Zakat al-Fitr, ensuring that your full contribution reaches those entitled to receive it.

What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a mandatory charity given at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid prayer. It is required for every Muslim — young or old, male or female — as long as they have more food than their basic needs.

It serves two important purposes:

  1. Purifies the fasting person from any shortcomings during Ramadan.
  2. Provides food for the poor, allowing them to celebrate Eid with dignity.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The Messenger of Allah obligated Zakat al-Fitr as purification for the fasting person from idle talk and indecent behavior, and as food for the poor.”

(Abu Dawud)

How Much is Zakat al-Fitr?

Traditionally, Zakat al-Fitr is the equivalent of one saa’ of staple food, approximately 3–4 kg of common food items such as rice, wheat, barley, or dates.

In many communities today, this amount is calculated as a monetary equivalent to make distribution easier.

At Humanity Increased, we have set the amount at:

$15 per person

If you are responsible for a household, you should give Zakat al-Fitr for every member of your family, including children.

When Should Zakat al-Fitr Be Given?

Zakat al-Fitr must be given before the Eid prayer.

It can be paid during the last days of Ramadan to ensure it reaches those in need in time.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed:

“Whoever pays it before the Eid prayer, it is accepted as Zakat al-Fitr. Whoever pays it after the prayer, it is ordinary charity.”

(Abu Dawud)

For this reason, we encourage donors to give early so distributions can reach vulnerable families before Eid.
