We Don’t Stop at Sponsorship
Building Safe Homes for Orphan Families in Uganda
Sponsoring an orphan is important. But sometimes monthly support is only the beginning.
Through Humanity Increased’s orphan program, we work to help children with the everyday needs that allow them to grow, attend school, receive care, and remain connected to a stable family environment.
But when we visit a child and find that the family is still living in unsafe or inadequate housing, we do not believe our responsibility ends with the monthly sponsorship.
Quality over Quantity means looking at the whole child.
That is why Humanity Increased is building four permanent shelter homes for vulnerable widow-led orphan families in Eastern Uganda.
A Safe Home Changes More Than Where a Child Sleeps
For families living with limited income, losing a husband and father can affect nearly every part of life.
Widowed mothers may be responsible for feeding their children, paying school expenses, finding healthcare, and maintaining a home with very little income. Some of the children supported through this project currently live in households struggling with inadequate housing, limited possessions, lack of electricity, school expenses, and other basic needs.
A safe home provides something that cannot be delivered in a monthly envelope.
It provides stability.
A roof that protects children from the rain.
A secure place for a widow to raise her family.
A place where a child can sleep, study, keep school materials, and return home each evening knowing that the home belongs to the family.
The shelter proposal calls for the construction of four durable homes for four widow-led families, directly benefiting 22 family members, including 18 children.
What Humanity Increased Is Building
Each shelter is planned as a permanent home rather than temporary emergency accommodation.
Construction includes site preparation, foundations, walls, roofing, plastering, flooring, doors, windows, painting, and finishing work. Each completed home will undergo an inspection before being handed over to the family. The direct construction budget for the four homes is $34,805.56, or approximately $8,701.39 per home. The complete project budget, including implementation support and documentation, is $40,000.
Meet Some of the Children
These are not anonymous beneficiary numbers.
They are children with schools they attend, subjects they enjoy, games they play, and plans for the future.
Among the children connected to these families are:
Lwanga Jamal, age 9, who enjoys reading and sports and hopes to become a doctor.
Kayimba Karim, age 6, whose mother works through farming to support her children.
Kawalya Bashamu, age 7, who enjoys reading and sports and dreams of becoming a footballer.
Nakaziba Nayati, who enjoys singing and spending time with her siblings.
Abdul Mudehele, who enjoys football and wants to continue his education.
Alikoba Shube, who enjoys outdoor activities and remains committed to school despite his family’s difficulties.
Ssenfuka Jamali, age 6, who enjoys football and reading and hopes to become a teacher.
Over the coming weeks, we will share their individual stories so donors can understand why Humanity Increased believes orphan care must go beyond a monthly payment.
Sponsorship Is the Beginning, Not the Finish Line
Humanity Increased’s current orphan sponsorship program provides support for a child’s essential needs while also setting aside funds in a Sharia-compliant savings account for the child’s future.
But our philosophy is broader than sponsorship. If a child needs education, we look at education.
If a family needs food, we look at food. If a widow needs a sustainable source of income, we look at livelihood support.
And when the children we support need a safe home, we should not simply say, “Your sponsorship has already been provided.” We try to solve the next problem.
That is what Quality over Quantity means at Humanity Increased. Humanity Increased’s current organizational messaging similarly emphasizes sustained assistance and long-term solutions rather than limiting support to seasonal distributions.
